Broadway Remembers: Broadway Falls Silent to Remember the War Dead and Mark 100 Years since the Armistice

100 years after the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918, when the guns fell silent on the Western Front bringing an end to the First World War, a Service of Remembrance and 2 minutes’ silence was held at the War Memorial on the village green in Broadway, Worcestershire. This was followed by a service in St Michael and All Angels’ Church to remember all the lives sacrificed in the service of our country and those traumatised and injured in conflict.

Remembered Today: Private 25249 Josiah J. Bayliss, Worcestershire Regiment transferred to 278004 Labour Corps

Headstone of Pte J.J. Bayliss, St Eadburgha’s, Broadway, Worcestershire.

Josiah James Bayliss, known as James, was born in 1882 at Pathlow near Wilmcote, Warwickshire, the third and youngest son of Josiah and Eliza Bayliss. James, a telegraph messenger, grew up in Mickleton, Gloucestershire, and in 1902 married Minnie Elizabeth Ann Mustoe in Stow-on-the-Wold. After their marriage, James and Minnie moved to Broadway.

Following the outbreak of the First World War, James joined the Worcestershire Regiment and was later transferred to the Labour Corps. Whilst stationed at Southern Command Labour Centre, Salisbury Plain, he contracted influenza and died of pneumonia, aged 36, on 2nd March 1919. His funeral took place at St Eadburgha’s Church, Snowshill Road, Broadway, on 8th March 1919 and he is buried in the churchyard.

Remembered Today: Pte 25249 Josiah J. Bayliss, Worcestershire Regiment and Labour Corps

Josiah James Bayliss, known as James,  was born in Pathlow near Wilmcote  in 1882, the son of Josiah and Eliza Bayliss. James married Minnie Elizabeth Ann Mustoe in Stow-on-the-Wold in 1912 and they moved to Broadway. James enlisted with the Worcestershire Regiment and during the First World War was transferred to the Labour Corps. Whilst stationed at the Southern Labour Centre, Fovant, on Salisbury Plain, James caught influenza during the ‘Spanish’ flu pandemic and died, aged 36, on 2nd March 1919.

James’s coffin was transported back to Broadway and after a service at St Eadburgha’s Church on 8th March 1919 was buried in the churchyard. Pte James Bayliss is commemorated on the Broadway War Memorial.
