Remembered Today: Pte M/340163 Arthur W. Box, Spare Parts Depot, Royal Army Service Corps

Born in Broadway in 1879, Arthur William Box, known as William, was the son of Joseph and Fanny Box. After leaving school, William worked as a groom in Broadway and married Susan Alice Stokes on 30th August 1899.

William enlisted in Broadway and during the First World War served with the Royal Army Service Corps with a Mechanical Transport Company in East Africa. Whilst in Tanzania, William contracted nephritis and died, aged 39, on 14th January 1918. William is buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery and is commemorated on a memorial tablet inside St Michael’s Church, Buckland, and on the Broadway War Memorial.
